Text Dictation – Relief and rescue operations accelerate in flood hit Jammu and Kashmir as water level recedes. Over ninety six thousand people have been rescued by the Armed Forces and NDRF so far. Besides 372 active boats, Army has deployed ninety more boats in Srinagar and adjoining areas. Eighty four transport aircraft and helicopters of Air Force and Army have been pressed into service. 1,237 tonnes of relief materials, including food packets, baby food and water bottles were dropped by the Air Force.
Armed Forces have also established 19 relief camps in Srinagar and Jammu region. In Srinagar region, camps are established at BB Cantt., Avantipur, Old Airfield, Sumbal, Chattargam and Jijamata Mandir. Medical teams of the Armed Forces are already operating and till now, more than 21,500 patients have been treated. A Defence Ministry release issued in New Delhi today said, Border Road Organisation personnel are trying hard to clear Jammu – Srinagar highway for traffic. The Jammu – Poonch road has been cleared for traffic. Road between Sinthan Pass and Anantnag is
now open for light vehicles. A report from our Jammu correspondent; “Food and other relief material is being provided to the stranded people. According Army’s Northern Command Head, Lt Gen D S Hooda the situation has improved quite significantly in the worst affected Srinagar city. Hectic efforts are also underway to gradually restore the snapped telecom links which is hampering the rescue work. The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is yet to be restored. As a part of the rescue
operation a special train is being run from Katra to Indore today. Transport aircraft and helicopters of IAF and Army Aviation Corps are carrying out non-stop rescue and relief operations while Army has deployed one lakh troops. National Disaster Response Force teams also scaled up their rescue efforts
A team of Central officials led by Home Secretary Anil Goswami will reach Srinagar shortly to coordinate relief and rescue operations in the city. Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Jitendra Singh is already camping in Srinagar reviewing the operations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had last night directed the Home Ministry to send senior officers from Delhi and other states to coordinate relief operations with local administration in flood-hit Srinagar. After reviewing relief operations in the State at a high level meeting in New Delhi he had stressed on providing basic necessities like food and water to people severely affected by the calamity. Officials in the Prime Minister’s Office will contribute their one day’s salary for the relief
of flood-affected people of Jammu and Kashmir.
In Gujarat, Flood situation in Vadodara city and low lying villages of the district is slowly improving following decreasing of water level in Vishwamitri river. Our Ahmedabad correspondent reports that the stoppage of rain has helped the state administrations to gear up the relief and rescue work in the worst affected areas.
“The situation in the villages of Savli taluka is still remain grim and two teams of National Disaster Relief Force have been pressed to the service. Medical teams have been sent to the worst affected areas to prevent the outbreak of any possible disease. State Government has deputed a team of geographically experienced officers in Vadodara district to make the life normal at the earliest. Meanwhile, the State Congress has alleged that flood was occurred following not releasing the water from Aajwa lake on time and demanded judicial probe.
