The Supreme Court today ordered status quo till the 30th of this month on Kerala’s new liquor policy. The apex court asked the Kerala High Court to decide expeditiously pleas challenging the state govt’s new liquor policy, which are listed for hearing on 18th of this month. Under the new policy, the state Government had last month decided to shut around 700 bars attached to hotels below five-star categories. Yesterday, the Supreme Court questioned the logic behind Kerala government’s new liquor policy for limiting bar licences to only 5-star hotels as part of a move to implement total prohibition in the State in ten years.
The Rajasthan High Court has ordered to stop discrimination on the basis of caste in cremation at various crematoriums in Jaipur. A bench headed by Chief Justice Sunil Ambwani and Justice VS Saradhana asked Jaipur Municipal Corporation to submit an action taken report within a week in this regard.Our correspondent reports the High court while hearing a PIL said that it is unfortunate that the Municipal Corporation is maintaining crematoriums which are divided on caste basis.
In all the big towns and cities in Rajasthan there are separate crematoriums for different castes. In Jaipur the municipal corporation is maintaining these crematoriums and social organizations also providing financial assistance to maintain them. Many times people of deprived sections of the society were stopped to perform last rituals at other castes crematoriums. The Rajasthan high court now ordered to stop this practice and said that it is the right of all communities to perform last rituals at any crematorium and no discrimination will be allowed on the basis of caste in cremation.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Environment and Forests, Prakash Javadekar has said that people have reposed hope and confidence in the 100 days of Modi government. Addressing a press conference in Hyderabad today, he said that investors have gained trust and coming forward to invest in the country. Even the multi-national companies across the globe are coming forward to invest in the country due to the measures taken by the Prime Minister.
In his address Mr. Javdekar said that the union government will protect the freedom of media. He however said that the central government will not permit havoc on freedom of media.
